I teach a year 7/8 class in New Zealand and have been using "Machinarium" as the stimulus for my writing. I have been focusing on narrative writing and the different aspects of it such as creating setting, character development, conflict/ resolution. I totally agree with you on the benefits of engaging students. I think the key to it's success is in the planning and expectations for the students. It is reassuring to hear of other teachers doing it as well.

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13582466140358362739noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6136763600493807558.post-4367811698457396952013-05-24T04:05:21.709-07:002013-05-24T04:05:21.709-07:00Well, it's for the good benefits of learning d...Well, it's for the good benefits of learning different things in school with the used of this gaming application using the iPad. So, there's a good possibility that it can be more effective way of learning how to write well, and in a very professional way.

shimmeringresumes.com reviews.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04177834730057726379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6136763600493807558.post-71166213316213531612013-05-17T02:56:16.056-07:002013-05-17T02:56:16.056-07:00Lovely share. I've been trying to develop lesson/unit plans that use technology more meaningfully & your site has been really useful. But on the sharing stuff, there's someone trying to sell lessons that look awfully like plans here! Thought you might like to know.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bike-Baron-iPad-Literacy-LessonsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6136763600493807558.post-37042695404026616572013-04-07T04:58:28.158-07:002013-04-07T04:58:28.158-07:00This is great. I would include lots of opportunities for talk in advance and throughout the planning process and link it to a "story mountain" writing frame ( just google story mountain!) which encouages writers to structure their stories with : Opening,Build up, Problem/Dilemma, Resoultion, Ending. I am sure there are many adventures of Bike Baron that are just waiting to be written about.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12217276162240171401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6136763600493807558.post-26990162703716396632012-08-27T04:46:12.021-07:002012-08-27T04:46:12.021-07:00Great post! I think this is exactly the sort of thing that needs to be done and shared, to really show the impact that using technology can have on the standards of writing, whether it be the handheld devices or writing for an audience. There is no doubt in my mind that technology if used correctly to a given audience can have a positive on the standards of writing but the sceptics out there want evidence. Like you, I find it strange that this study hasn't had more of an impact, yet anyway.
It is certainly an area I'd be interested in studying further along with my colleagues. Over 700 pupils between the ages of 7-10 were divided into two groups. One group did writing tasks with the regular pen and paper while the other group engaged in writing with social media. While the girls seemed to profit equally in both groups, the boys in the second group closed the writing gap, catching up with the girls.

Strangely enough, this study hasn't made any waves yet.
Here's a summary of the study, but it's in German.
